Collage

Collage is an assemblage, a piece of art made by sticking together a variety of materials. It began when paper was invented in China 200BC.

Picasso used collage in his art.

Henri Mattise used scissors to create art.

Henri Matisse.
This simple collage was created by cutting magazine photographs and reassessing them.
These are the tools I use, a cutting mat, a sharp craft knife, tweezers, a crinkle gadget, double sided sticky tape.
A very simple collage using different coloured papers, cutting and sticking.
At the end of the day. A slightly more complex collage using a variety of materials.

First painting for months.

Lockdown proved an even less stimulating time for art in the form of painting. We had just started back to Art Club Ponterwyd after the winter break when it happened.

I had an invitation from Cefn Croes Winfarm Trust to trial meetings on Zoom. Trepidation followed, I love ICT but am always wary of new innovations. I canvassed the membership, got invitations sent out and panicked. Now friends from my teaching days may not associate that word with me, I was always good at hiding panic. The meeting drew near and it worked. Basically we had a verbal ball. We talked about the future and I set a challenge. Inside outside picture medium of individual choice. Taken from work I had seen by David Hockney and Cornish artist Sarah Bowman.

I set the challenge so I had to do the work too. I started with my little blue jug from the windowsill.

My first sketch a little blue jug.
I don’t like sketching under the work so I create a reference sketch in my book. I annotated this with colour references. I also use this as I go along to practice, in this case leaves drawn with felt pen.
I was using watercolour paper so masking tape to a clipboard (I have posh wooden ones somewhere but couldn’t find them)
I do a watercolour wash like this one, it gives the shapes I need.
I used watercolour pencils to create more image, then add depth with the neo colour watersoluble wax pastels. Finally use the drawing fibre tips to put in fine detail.
My final painting.
